INFANT MASSAGE

The Importance of Touch

Touch is a basic emotional and physical need. For example, we know that infants who have been deprived of human contact suffer both physically and emotionally.

Massage can provide a positive connection and promote bonding between you and your child, whilst offering physical and emotional benefits.

Enjoy this experience with your child. The benefits will certainly be shared by both of you

The Benefits of Infant Massage for Infant

1. Relief of discomfort – massage releases our ’feel good’ hormones, endorphins, and can therefore assist in relieving systemic discomfort associated with teething, colic, chest and chest congestion, and reflux.

2. Sleep – babies will often sleep for longer periods after a massage and have longer periods of deep sleep.

3. Teaches Children that They are in Charge of their Body – massage teaches the parent to be more intuitive and interpret an infant’s body language. As you learn your infant’s ‘ No Cues’, you learn to understand and respect your child’s rejection of touch. Your child will soon learn that they have mastery over, and deserve respect, regarding who touches their bodies.

4. Optimises brain and nervous system development

5. Aids relaxation

6. Helps tone muscles and aids growth

7. Aids digestion and deepens respiration

8. Assists with the development of co-ordination and balance

9. Strengthens the immune system

10. Enhances connection and bonding

The Benefits of Infant Massage for Parent/Caregiver  Parents and grandparents also benefit from providing massage to a child. Research show that adults who provide massage to infants experience less anxiety and fewer depressive symptoms, improved mood, decreased stress levels and improved self- esteem.
