Counselling … a problem shared
“..Sometimes in our lives we all have pain
We all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there’s always tomorrow
Lean on me, when you’re not strong…”
Whilst Bill Withers was not writing about the counselling profession in 1972, these song lyrics resonate, with what it means to be in practice as a counsellor. Throughout our life, as children, as an adolescent, and later as an adult, we face challenges that can be overwhelming and difficult to navigate alone.
Counselling provides a supportive, non-judgemental space to explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Whether you are facing stress, anxiety, self-esteem or navigating life’s transitions, counselling offers the chance to share the weight of life and have someone walking beside you while you find your way forward.
Counselling begins with creating a safe and steady relationship. It is not about quick fixes, advice, or offering ready-made answers. Instead, a counsellor will listen with care, hold space for your story and help you uncover the strengths, and discover the resilience you carry within.
For children and adolescents, this often takes the form of play, creativity, and imagination. Meeting the child at their level and helping them to communicate in their unique way. For adults, counselling may look more like meaningful conversations, and gentle reflection, providing new perspectives on how to navigate everyday life.
People come to counselling for many reasons: a child struggling with anxiety or friendships, an adolescent finding their place in the world, or an adult feeling weighed down by stress, change or a sense of “stuck-ness”.
The benefits unfold differently for everyone. Some find calm after feeling overwhelmed. Others gain clarity and direction where there was confusion. A child might become more confident in expressing themselves and more capable of regulating emotions. An adult might notice positive outcomes that reflect their inner strengths and uncover resilience, being brought about utilising a healing therapeutic relationship.
Counselling is about helping people live more connected, balanced, and fulfilling lives.
